Attachment-Focused Coding System for Story STems
I regularly hold 2-day workshops for mental health professionals (psychologists, social workers, and child development researchers) on how to administer and code The Attachment Focused Coding System for Story Stems (AFCS; Reiner & Splaun, 2008). This is a short, play-based measure of attachment representations for children ages 4 – 9. This system is brief, consisting of 4 story stems (wherein the interviewer tells the first part of a story that the child is asked to complete) which are coded on 9 dimensions. The AFCS is user-friendly and easy to become reliable on, while providing useful information regarding the child’s attachment to each parent and ability to resolve challenging everyday dilemmas. Validity studies have shown strong reliability and external validity, even with difficult clinical samples (Splaun, Reiner, Steele, Steele, & Murphy, 2010). At a workshop, you will learn story stems administration and coding, as well as how the AFCS may be used in clinical and research contexts. A reliability set of story stems from 15 children is provided for those who would like to become reliable coders of the AFCS. Individualized feedback and a certificate of reliability (for those who successfully complete the coding) will be provided, which is all included in the cost of the training. Please email me at allisonsplaunphd@gmail.com for information about upcoming workshops.
